Houses, schools, churches etc don't need roads, so place them away from roads. Don't overdo it on the roads, you only need them for some buildings.Even industrial neighbourhoods will look luxurious this way. Once you can afford to, place parks between all your roads and buildings. Don't build parks too soon, because the upkeep will hurt you. Leave room for parks, preferably a one-tile space between your roads and all your buildings that need road access.Keep the starting buildings for now, but delete or move them once you can afford to. Build a teamster port on a different island with resources and fertilities you need. The prebuilt layout is ugly and will tie your hands if you start expanding from there. I'm looking to start a new save once the new DLC comes out, so before then does anyone have any experience with starting from colonial era and having trouble making a nice island? How do you go about doing that? I do this primarily because I don't know how to transition colonial era layouts into making it look how I would like in the modern times, but also moving around and building so much new things as soon as I go into the modern era is extremely overwhelming and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. across the colonial era isn't the best idea, I just place everything in the same area and that goes on until about late cold war / modern times where I then decide to move hundreds of buildings around islands I've never even put a port or road on yet to begin my 'nice' city. I start in the colonial era and since there isn't much and spreading out your plantations, industry etc. I like playing Tropico 6 to make nice, beautiful picturesque islands with a realistic class divide, but I always have trouble getting a nice layout and spread across the whole island to nicely divide the middle/upper-class areas of the archipelago vs the industry and 'poorer' side of the island vs the tourists luxury getaway.
